Alpacas originated in the Mountains of South America. they have been in North America since 1984. In Peru, Chile and Bolivia Alpacas are known for their Luxurious fibre. Alpaca fibre is an exquisite natural fibre. The Alpaca fibre is soft and silky supple and smooth to the touch. It is as soft as Cashmere and warmer and stronger then lambs wool! Alpaca is not itchy and can be worn close to the skin.
Alpacas come in 22 natural colors with many different shades and blends in between.
Alpacas have one baby a year. They are usually standing within 30 min to 1 hour. Alpaca babies are called Crias and they are normally born during daylight hours. This is much easier then sitting up all night and waiting for the horses to deliver!!
They have a lifespan of 20-25 years. Alpacas do not eat very much and are very clean animals , they use a communal dung pile which makes cleaning up after them very easy.
Alpacas are induced ovulators which means they do not have heat cycles and can be bred anytime of year. With our Canadian winters it is not wise to breed for winter babies
